Benefits and Drawbacks of Web-Based Research
There are many benefits to conducting web-based research. However, as with all research techniques, there are trade-offs involved with this methodology. Web-based research is not the perfect choice for every study. Below is a table that summarizes some of the key benefits and drawbacks of web-based research as compared to telephone-based research.

Benefit Over Telephone Studies
Drawback or Limitation
Data collection is faster. This is not always true. It depends on the target audience, the list source, and the complexity of the web survey design.
Ability to implement longer, more complex studies. This is true - within limits. Dropout rates do increase when the survey exceeds 15 minutes in length. Long surveys often require incentives, especially for MIS and technical professionals.
Good medium for presenting product concepts, lengthy descriptions and visuals. However, complex graphics and visuals may require high speed internet connections or special player software to view.
Respondents can take the survey at their convenience. However, some never get around to it. This could introduce a response bias.
Less intrusive However, guidelines for sending e-mails are becoming very strict and spamming is now a legal issue. This is less of an issue with phone interviews.
Data accuracy: Respondents are entering the information themselves while viewing the question. Data inaccuracy: To finish the survey fast, or to get the incentive, some will just enter any response to complete the task.
Less expensive This depends on your research target and the availability of a projectable list. Web surveys are often most cost-effective for larger sample sizes.

Despite all of the benefits, there are many misconceptions about web-based research. The most notable is that web-based research is always the best, cheapest, and fastest way to survey your target respondents. Although often true, this is not always the case. The TechWise Research Team understands the benefits and drawbacks of web-based research. We will work with you to determine the best methodology given your research objectives, timeline and budget.
